HandsFree Networks® Launches Industry's First Open Source Automated Support System

Newton, Mass. (July 10, 2000)- HandsFree Networks (www.handsfreenetworks.com) today introduced its first Open Source project, inviting the industry's most talented software developers and systems administrators to jointly create the first Internet-based automated support system for the small business and home markets.
The team will eventually include thousands of developers and systems administrators, who will be paid to develop automated solutions for the recurring system problems that matters most to them and their users. These solutions will go into a database open to all.
"We're taking Open Source to a whole new level," said Alessandro Donnini, president of HandsFree Networks. "We're creating the world's first automated support system, and tapping the expertise of systems administrators around the world to do it; and in addition to recognizing their contributions, we're paying these experts for their valuable insight."
HandsFree Networks will demonstrate its software at the O'Reilly Open Source Software Convention, in Monterey, Calif. July 17- 20, 2000.
The HandsFree Networks support system automatically resolves all known problems that repeatedly occur on small networks, whether it's failure to access a shared resource or connect to the Internet, whether it's an unintended configuration change, or an application crash. The symptom detection and resolution engine, which is in beta, detects events that occur on a desktop, server, and on the network. As it detects a combination of symptoms that could cause a problem, it searches the database of automated solutions and when it finds the corresponding solution applies it automatically, in the background, with no user intervention.
Service providers and system administrators receive immediate notification of any event that takes place on the networks they support and can react quickly even to those symptoms that don't yet have automated solutions. After they are resolved manually the first time, their solutions are encoded in the HandsFree Networks database of automated solutions. From then on, they will be resolved automatically whenever they occur.
