Slashroot.org: Setting up a Linux Gateway
Setting up a gateway with Linux is not hard to do. A gateway allows two or more networked computers to use the same internet connection. However, these two computers are not visible to the internet. Only the gateway is visible. This makes the networked systems somewhat more secure. This process is called "IP Masquerading."
