"LinuxFromScratch is a project aiming at teaching the reader more about the inner workings of Linux. It's intended for those seeking to learn more about how Linux works and how the various pieces of the Operating System fit together and interact. This probably isn't a good resource for people who just started with Linux or who are about to move from the Microsoft world to the Linux world.
This isn't a bare Linux copy but a fully functional, full-blown Linux distribution with the same capabilities as existing Linux distributions such as Debian, SuSe, Slackware, RedHat and others. While the step-by-step instructions contained in this book are farily complete, some knowledge of basic Unix commands is required and assumed.
"If this sounds like something you might want to undertake, then welcome to Linux From Scratch! You are about to leave the known commercial distribution world behind and venture into the somewhat "dark and arcane" world of Makefiles, compiling compilers, building a kernel and much more."
