SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- VA Linux Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: LNUX) today announced that VA Linux Professional Services has been selected by Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) to develop and test HP LaserJet printer support under Linux(R) and Samba. VA Linux Professional Services will also manage and support this development as an open-source project on VA's SourceForge(TM), an application service provider for open-source developers.

"At HP, we strive to provide compatible and powerful HP LaserJet solutions for all operating systems," said Neal Martini, vice president and general manager of HP LaserJet Imaging Systems. "We are working with VA Linux using the open-source model to provide support for our customers that use Linux. Through the open-source development model, our customers can participate in developing successful printing solutions that will best serve their specific needs."

VA Linux Professional Services will help HP develop enterprise-class printing solutions for use in Linux and Samba printing environments. By involving the open-source community in the development of its Linux printing solutions, HP expands its powerful printing functionality and broadens its potential customer base.

"HP's decision to provide open-source printing solutions will enable HP to both support and leverage the power of the open-source development community," said Dr. Larry M. Augustin, president and CEO of VA Linux Systems. "VA Linux Professional Services is proud to team with HP to provide support for HP LaserJet printers in Linux on SourceForge."

SourceForge offers Web-based tools and resources for open-source projects, and has grown into a focal point for open-source development. SourceForge entered a public test period in mid-November 1999 and now hosts over 1,300 open-source projects and more than 7,500 registered users.
