Dear Jobs Staff!

Here is my question:

My job isn't bad exactly, but I'm bored to death. All I do is install software on people's workstations, troubleshoot printer problems, and surf the net. I want to do something more interesting, but I'm not really sure what, and this job does pay all right. It's just that half the time I get totally frustrated and just feel like quitting immediately, and the other half I feel like I should stay here where it's stable. I just feel like I'm stuck here with no place to go. What would you do?"

Dear Stuck:

Well first of all, the main thing is, don't quit that job until you find another one! You've already taken the first step which is deciding that you want to get out...the second step is deciding what exactly you want to do, and then trying to do it.

The way we see it, if you've already got a job, you're one up on a lot of the folks who are out looking. Whenever you're just ready to quit (and believe us, we've all been there at one time or another) remember that as long as your rent is paid, you're not going to show up at those interviews looking hungry and desperate. Usually, hungry and desperate get you one thing -- another job you aren't going to like much.

Here on jobs.linux.com, we're working on a series of articles and strategies for figuring out just what it is you want to do, and then how to go about finding it. One thing that we've found is that a lot of times, once you're actively searching for a new job, the urgency to quit the job you hate lessens, at least a little bit. One mistake a lot of us have made is just sitting in the job, getting angrier and more frustrated day after day, until finally we just quit in a rage.

That's why it's important that you don't even apply for just any job, but wait until you find the ones that look like you'll actually enjoy them! When you get ready to throw your job out the window, just remember you're not going to be there forever, but just until that good job comes along.

There are thousands of good jobs out there...it just takes some looking, and some focus on what you want to do, and the will power to just go and apply. A few of us here have had problems just getting up the will to apply for something new, thinking "Aw, they'll never hire me" or "Who am I kidding." The truth is, you just need to take that first step and the rest tend to get easier. Good luck!
