Icecast is an open source audio broadcasting system. Icecast uses mp3 as it's broadcasting format. Icecast works with audio streams, and lets clients like xmms receive the broadcasts. On the icecast web site, there are currently 85 of these streams being broadcasted. You can, of course, start your own broadcasting.
