An Interview with Sam Lantinga
Sam Lantinga is the creator of the SDL gaming library and the Lead Programmer for Loki Entertainment Software.
"Sam Lantinga: Heroes of Might and Magic III and Heretic II are very close to being done. Heavy Gear II is in progress."
"Linux.com: What do you find to be the most difficult part of porting games to Linux?"
"Sam Lantinga: Every game is different. With Heretic II, we had a tough time with assembler. Heavy Gear II uses lots of features not available in the release version of EGCS."
"Linux.com: Which 3D libraries are being used for Heretic 2 and Heavy Gear 2?"
"Sam Lantinga: OpenGL."
"Linux.com: I guess that means that the games will get an extra performance boost from several 3D accelerators, especially when XFree86 4.0 (with its Direct Rendering Infrastructure) is released. Will an accelerator be required for these games?"
"Sam Lantinga: Yes, the games run much faster with hardware acceleration. Software OpenGL isn't playable. Heretic II has a software renderer, but Heavy Gear 2 is 3D only."
