Keeping up to date with patches
Ensure you're up to date with your latest patches for your specific distribution. Debian makes it easy with apt-get, while RedHat has the errata section on their website. SuSE has its own hardening and updating scripts, while the other distributions will have information about keeping up to date on their website.
