Survey.com and ENT Magazine Establish the Linux ... Research Initiative
First Report Will Focus On IT Adoption Plans for Linux And BSD Open Source Unix Across the Entire Range of Organizational Computing, From Small Business to the Enterprise
The research objective will be to identify the major trends, issues, and growth areas in the burgeoning open source software market. The first report in the program will focus on IT's attitudes about and adoption plans for the Linux and BSD open-source Unix operating systems, spanning the entire range of organizational computing from small business to the enterprise.
Open source software is distributed under a variety of licenses that generally guarantee the right to read, redistribute, modify, and use the software freely. Proponents claim that by supporting independent peer review and rapid evolution of source code, open source licensing promotes software reliability, quality, and security.
The most famous example of open source software is the Linux operating system, which has garnered support from major vendors such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Silicon Graphics, and Dell. Other examples include applications such as Sendmail, the Apache Web server, the Perl scripting language, and others that serve as the fundamental "plumbing" of the Internet.
