Orem, UT -- August 9, 1999 -- Caldera Systems, Inc. today announced that its award-winning OpenLinux LInux wiZARD (LIZARD) -- the industry's first point and click install of Linux -- and NKFS, Caldera's kernel file system module for NetWare, will be freely contributed back to the Linux industry and available for download (www.openlinux.org) by September 3, 1999.
LIZARD The award-winning LIZARD install was developed by Caldera Systems engineers in Germany, and by Troll Tech, a leading software tools development company in Oslo, Norway.
LIZARD makes the transition from Windows to Linux easier for the new user and reduces down time created by command line installation. "We were overwhelmed by the response to our OpenLinux LIZARD install," said Ransom Love, CEO of Caldera Systems, Inc. "Both Caldera Systems and the "Trolls" knew we had a winner when both reviewers and the Fortune 500 said that it was the one feature they had been waiting for in order to recommend and implement Linux on the enterprise."
"Caldera Systems wants to exhibit its commitment to the Linux and Open Source communities by facilitating continuous Linux growth and development," said Drew Spencer, Caldera Systems engineering vice president. "We've done it in the past by open-sourcing other Caldera technologies. We know from experience that giving back will accelerate that process and we hope that others will join us in the continued enhancement of LIZARD for the benefit of the entire Linux industry."
Open Source License Collaboration Caldera Systems will work closely with the Open Source community to create a license enabling LIZARD technology to be freely contributed back.
NKFS NKFS is a file system kernel module that provides file system support for the Caldera Systems' client for Linux based on NetWareTM. This Open Source initiative will allow other distributions to utilize the NKFS Linux driver to support their respective NovellŪ clients requiring current file system support.
Availability Both technologies will be available for download on September 3, 1999, from www.openlinux.org. LIZARD will be demonstrated in the Caldera Systems booth (#413) at Linuxworld in San Jose, California, August 10-12.
