Inprise Announces Commitment to Linux
Survey Results Conclude Mainstream Application Development is Next for Linux
|Page 1 of 1|
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Linux World Conference & Expo, Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: INPR) today announced its commitment to support the Linux platform. The company announced the immediate availability of VisiBroker for Linux, a new version of its award-winning object request broker, and is demonstrating JBuilder for Linux, its upcoming Java development tool, on the showroom floor at Linux World.
In addition, Inprise is releasing the complete results of its Linux developer survey, in which over 24,000 respondents indicated that Linux is a critical operating system for their customers moving forward. The results also indicate that the majority of developers participating in the survey are planning application development and client server database development projects on Linux. According to a recent report by International Data Corporation, because applications drive operating system sales, having more applications available on Linux will drive Linux in Enterprise computing.
"We have now been shipping InterBase for Linux for over a year. With today's announcement of VisiBroker for Linux, customers now have access to a Linux version of a leading CORBA ORB for distributing and deploying applications across multiple platforms," said Dale Fuller, interim president and CEO of Inprise Corporation. "Based on the tremendous feedback from our survey, we are also assessing which additional tools and technologies Inprise will be extending to this expanding market."
Additional findings from the Borland Linux Developer survey are available at www.borland.com/linux/survey and include:
* 72 percent of respondents are most interested in using a rapid application development environment for their future Linux development needs * Over 40 percent of respondents are interested in developing with Delphi on the Linux platform * 40 percent are interested in using a C/C++ development tool for their Linux projects * Over 75 percent are planning to develop application level projects * Over 90 percent require graphical user interface support * Over 90 percent require database connectivity
"As a developer, I am thrilled that Inprise will be bringing the ease of use, elegance and efficiency of its Borland tools heritage to the Linux marketplace. These Linux tools will give developers the capabilities we want and need to further mainstream the adoption of the Linux platform for Internet application development. Linux is about new options and directions on the Internet; Inprise will help get us there faster," said Chris Staszak, director of technology for an online trading community for small businesses.
"Linux development is about to get even more exciting -- we are greatly looking forward to the prospect of Borland development tools for Linux," said Robert A. DelRossi, president of TurboPower Software Company. "We believe that Inprise's proven expertise with rapid application development tools will further extend the widespread adoption of Linux as a viable alternative for servers as well as desktop applications. No matter how you look at it, Borland tools are just what Linux developers have been waiting for."
